Baseball Jersey Material: Fabric Options and How to Choose

ToggleShort answer: Most baseball jerseys are made of polyester knit, sometimes with mesh panels for airflow. Polyester is light, breathable, quick-drying and resists shrinking, and it holds sublimated colour, so names, numbers and logos become part of the fabric and do not crack or peel. Cotton blends feel soft but hold sweat and do not take sublimation properly.
At a glance
| Most common | Polyester knit or mesh |
|---|---|
| Best for sublimation | Polyester or high-polyester fabric |
| Soft feel | Cotton blends, but they do not sublimate well |
| Tip | Order a sample to feel the fabric first |
What are baseball jerseys made of?
Most team jerseys use polyester knit fabric. It is light, resists stretching out of shape and dries quickly after sweat or rain. Some jerseys use mesh panels to add airflow. Cotton and cotton blends exist, but they hold moisture and fade faster.
Polyester, mesh or blend: what is the difference?
| Fabric | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester knit | Game jerseys, sublimated designs, long seasons | Can feel warmer than mesh in extreme heat |
| Polyester mesh | Hot climates, practice jerseys | Less suited to very fine detail |
| Cotton blend | Casual fan wear | Holds sweat; does not take sublimation well |
Which fabric works with sublimation?
Sublimation needs polyester or a high-polyester fabric, because the dye bonds with polyester fibers. That is why sublimated jerseys keep their color and stretch. Read the details on our sublimation page.
How do you choose by climate and age group?
For hot climates choose breathable polyester or mesh. For cooler seasons a standard polyester knit is fine. Youth players usually want lighter, softer fabric, while adult leagues often prefer a bit more weight for durability.
How do you check the fabric before a big order?
Order a sample, then check the feel, the stretch and how the color looks in daylight. Samples are the safest way to compare fabrics before a full order. See order samples.
Next step
Next step: send your design and roster through the baseball uniform order form, and tell us your climate so we can suggest a fabric.
Once you know which fabric suits your season, see our custom baseball uniforms or the youth baseball uniforms page, and send your roster and design through the baseball order form.
How fabric affects comfort and durability
Fabric decides how a jersey feels at the end of a long game. Polyester wicks sweat away from the skin and dries quickly, so players stay comfortable. It also resists shrinking and stretching out of shape, so a jersey that is washed every week still fits in the last game of the season.
Fabric and sublimated color
Because sublimation bonds the dye with polyester fibers, the color goes into the fabric. This is why sublimated baseball jerseys do not have a raised print that can crack or peel. On cotton the dye would not bond, so the print would wash out. If your team wants a full-color design, polyester is the right base.
Questions to ask about any fabric
- Is it polyester or a blend, and how much polyester?
- Is it knit or mesh, and how breathable is it?
- Does it take sublimation, or is it for screen printing only?
- Can I get a sample before ordering?
Matching fabric to your team
Choose lighter mesh for hot climates and practice jerseys, a standard knit for game jerseys, and ask for samples if players have different needs. If the team plays in cold weather, think about whether players will wear layers underneath and ask us about fit.
Polyester vs cotton baseball jerseys side by side
If you are deciding between polyester and cotton, compare them on the points that matter during a season:
- Sweat and rain: polyester wicks sweat away and dries quickly; cotton holds moisture and gets heavy.
- Shape: polyester resists shrinking and stretching out of shape; cotton can shrink and sag after many washes.
- Colour: polyester takes sublimation, so the colour goes into the fabric; on cotton the dye does not bond and washes out.
- Feel: cotton blends feel soft at first; polyester knit feels light and smooth.
- Best use: polyester for game and practice jerseys; cotton blends for casual fan wear.
For a team that plays a full season, polyester knit is the safer choice, with mesh for hot climates or practice jerseys. If you are unsure how a fabric feels, order a sample before the full order.
Frequently asked questions
What are baseball jerseys made of?
Most are polyester knit, sometimes with polyester mesh panels for airflow. Cotton blends are mainly used for casual fan wear.
Are baseball jerseys polyester or cotton?
Team jerseys are almost always polyester, because it is lighter, dries faster and holds sublimated colour. Cotton holds sweat and fades faster.
What is mesh baseball jersey fabric good for?
Hot climates and practice jerseys, because it adds airflow. It is less suited to very fine print detail than polyester knit.
Do sublimated baseball jerseys crack or fade?
No. Sublimation bonds the dye with the polyester fibres, so there is no raised print to crack or peel.
Can I mix sizes, names and numbers in one order?
Yes. The minimum order is 10 pieces, and you can mix sizes, names and numbers in that order.
What is the best baseball jersey material?
Polyester is the most common choice because it is light, breathable, dries quickly and holds sublimated color.
Can you sublimate on cotton?
Not properly. Sublimation needs polyester or a high-polyester fabric.
Which fabric is best for hot weather?
Breathable polyester or mesh.
Can I check the fabric before ordering?
Yes. Order a sample to check the feel, fit and color.
What is the minimum order?
10 pieces. You can mix sizes, names and numbers in one order.
Is polyester better than cotton for baseball jerseys?
For team uniforms, usually yes. Polyester is lighter, dries faster and holds sublimated color.
Will the jersey shrink?
Polyester resists shrinking and stretching. Follow the care instructions to keep it that way.
Can I get a fabric sample?
Yes. See our order samples page.
